The Modern Tradition

2022 | Architectural Design and Drawing

‘The Modern Tradition’ is an exploration of using straw as a modern building material, turning the industry inwards and developing a world where construction becomes a cyclical craft between communities. The project proposes a new way of life in major cities like London, and tackles subjects regarding the consequences of the current UK construction industry.

The project is located in the Robin Hood Garden’s estate and comments on the UK’s flippant nature of demolishing ‘unsuccessful’ architecture to be replaced with cheap new builds that have detrimental levels of embodied carbon. The Modern Tradition proposes the potential of these ‘unsuccessful’ estates being altered and adapted in order to perform better in contrast to being knocked down and rebuilt; consequently a much more sustainable solution. Through the use of a growing crafting community new pre-fabricated biodegradable panels begin to replace poor performing facades of the factory worker’s residence, that is Robin Hood Gardens, and begin to spread outwardly taking over London and finally the UK.
